CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Do you think we can get some more of those?” Ash nodded towards the top plate of the stand where miniature chocolate éclairs, millefeuille and cupcakes had been. Now, there were only crumbs.

Connor laughed. “God, where do you put it all? I can’t eat another thing, but yes, I’m sure we can.”

Ash’s lips lifted in a lazy smile. “I need to load up on carbs because I’m going to need all my energy later.”

“Oh yes, and why’s that?” Connor returned Ash’s smile with one of his own. They held each other’s gaze. Ash’s eyes were dark, his dilated pupils eclipsing the bright blue irises. Warmth coiled in Connor’s stomach as he hardened.

“Bloody hell, Ash. Not here, not when we can’t do anything about it.” Connor felt heat burn his face, as it burned in his groin, and he shifted around in his chair. He glared across the table. Ash’s grin was no longer lazy; it was wicked and his eyes glittered with mischief. You little shit. “You forget, it’s in my power to order you more cake. Or not.”

Ash laughed. “More cake, or—something else? There’s only one choice. It’s absolutely, one hundred per cent got to be cake.”

Earlier, they’d visited the Tate Modern before they’d made their way to Borough where they pushed their way through the crowds of tourists and locals who flocked to the famous artisan food market. From there they’d wound down a small side street, to a quirky little hotel where afternoon tea awaited them.

Connor beckoned for their young waitress, and gave her an encouraging smile. In flawless French, he ordered another round of cakes and pastries. The waitress’s face lit up, and she beamed, as she went to fetch fresh supplies.

“That’s very impressive.” Ash placed his forearms on the table and leaned forward. “Tell me again where you learned to speak such good French.”

Connor took a sip of his tea, buying himself vital seconds.

“I lived in Paris for a couple of years, where I worked in a hotel. You know that.”

“Hmm, true, but you never talk about it.”

That’s because it would mean talking about Greg. Connor couldn’t bring himself to do that, not yet, but the gnawing truth was that he was going to have to if he and Ash were to have some sort of future together. But not today, not when Ash was happy and relaxed. He wouldn’t let Greg cast his shadow.

“It was early in my career and I thought some international experience would be good, so I got a job in a hotel out there. I had a contact. It was hard work and I did all the crappy jobs, but it was invaluable experience.” None of that’s a lie, Ash. Greg got a job and I followed him, when I was young and star-struck and thought he could do no wrong.

“And then you came back and became a superstar in the world of boutique hotels.”

“I’m just a star at the moment, the super bit comes later.”

They smiled into each other’s eyes, and Connor willed Ash to drop the subject.
